The professional department at Oldfield Smith & Co have achieved further success in reducing liability for business rates for a local property owner.
Our team were contacted after a property used for the storage of a private collection of classic motor vehicles was subjected to tax with a backdated demand for around £30,000 and a considerable ongoing liability. After examining the facts, our Surveyors lodged a robust defence, successfully arguing that the property was not used for business purposes and so was not liable for non-domestic rating. A full rebate has been obtained for our client and the property deleted from the rating list.
Head of Professional Services, Bernard Smith, said “This case raised some interesting and complex issues which required careful and objective analysis. We submitted a very balanced and well constructed case to the Valuation Office Agency and after considering our views, I am delighted that they concurred with our assessment of the factual and legal position relating to the property”.
