Success for our UAV team

24th April 2021

This week saw our chief UAV pilot, Bernard Smith, in Wallingford for his CAA Operational Evaluation.  A beautiful day for flying resulted in some great footage of Howbery Park solar farm and the adjacent business park.  We are pleased to report that Bernard passed his flight assessment, scoring highly in all sectors and judged to be “performing above the standards expected in all respects”.  Having passed the theory exam earlier in the year with a score of 100%, Bernard now holds a General Visual Line of Sight (GVC) qualification, which replaced the Permission for Commercial Operation (PfCO) when UAV regulations were updated at the beginning of the year.  He also holds an A2 Certificate of Competence which allows him to fly larger drones at lower separation distances in the Open Category.

Oldfield Smith & Co are now finalising our application for a CAA Operational Authorisation, which will allow us greater freedom to fly larger drones in more complex environments within the Specific Category.  We will be expanding our range of services shortly to take advantage of this, but in the meantime we already offer a comprehensive range of survey and inspection options including :

  • roof condition surveys
  • inspection of gutters, chimneys and flues
  • assessment of cut edge corrosion and metal roof condition
  • inspection of parapets, valley gutters, and outlets
  • routine insurance inspections
  • aerial photography and video for marketing and promotion

We carry specialist aviation insurance and operate to the highest professional standards using the latest technology.  We can capture video in 4k ultra high resolution and offer still images for inclusion in written reports and marketing details.
